Production Update: Curtain

Production is now complete on Curtain, and I must say everything went swimmingly. Now, just a little bit of post-production, and I’ll have my own DVD of my movie. Yay! Vik and I decided that Saturday was one of the easiest shoot days we had. This is not at the expense of getting the good stuff, either. I am delighted with the footage we got, and everyone in the cast and crew did an amazing job. It certainly helped that the production was very simple, which lended itself to a fairly low-key day.

Of course, I have to give a big thanks to Meredith at the Greenway Court Theatre, who was kind enough to give us access to the theatre for the day. I cannot begin to convey the generosity in being allowed into such a perfect location for free. The dressing room we shot in had such an incredible personality and energy to it already, I couldn’t imagine a better location. There would certainly be no movie at all if it weren’t for her.

This movie was such a joy to work on. Everyone in the cast and crew showed such dedication, and it was particularly nice to have no egos being touted about on set. “Nice” is such a weak and ordinary word to use, but it’s true. It is nice when the cast and crew get along so well since that is such a rare thing in this business. I think we all had a good time, too.

Once I got home on Saturday night, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with myself. It had been over a month of planning this movie, and it felt odd to have all of that be done. I was able to come down from the creative high slowly with the Independent Spirit Awards and the Oscars the same weekend.

My Oscar commentary is forthcoming, but a quick parting thought:

Yes, we’re all annoyed that Martin Scorsese still doesn’t have an Oscar, but it’s just as much of a crime that Sydney Lumet never got one, either.
