Who is Samuel Jinx?

I am pleased to say that the script that has occupied much of my time for the better half of a year, Samuel Jinx, is finally complete. Like all scripts, there is still a little fine tuning to do, but I am very happy with what I have now. A month or two ago, I was not so happy. The tale of young Samuel Book (a.k.a “Jinx”) was one that certainly grew much more in the telling than I initially intended. What began as a simple adventure story, ballooned into a 176-page “rough” draft and the makings of an epic novel. Said novel was The Lonely Boy, which I had written as a part of NaNoWriMo and comprised roughly the first half of the story of Samuel Jinx. It was an interesting experiment in developing the story concurrently as a novel and a screenplay, and many of the problems I found with the 176-page version (mostly that of length) I was able to solve with the writing of the novel version. I don’t know what will ever become of the novel, but the screenplay (and thus a film) is my medium of choice.

(On a side thought, it may have been interesting to keep an online journal during the development process of Samuel to share my various trials and tribulations as it were, but it was, alas, not to be. Even my personal journal was neglected as the writing process was a lot longer and more involved than I anticipated.)

Samuel Book is a young boy of many talents. He is a curious mind and an avid reader, and he is a bit of an inventor. More than anything else in the world, he wants to be like everyone else in his strange little village–he wants to be a wizard. The only problem is, unlike everyone else in his strange little village, he cannot preform any magic. He doesn’t fit in. He is ridiculed by his peers, who call him “Jinx”. Ultimately, Samuel’s story is that of a misfit trying to find his place. And of course, he does get into strange little adventures in that strange little village of his. I am quite proud of it. I’ll have sample pages up soon.
